How to choose a classical guitar for beginners?

Choosing a classical guitar

Many would say the opposite, but there is nothing better than a good old classical guitar for learning to play guitar. It is certainly suitable for playing classical or flamenco, but it can also adapt to all other musical styles. So here is how you are going to make the right choice for your classical guitar.

Check the size of the guitar

For those who do not know it yet, for the family of stringed instruments like the violin, cello, guitars… there are at least 4 different sizes ranging from ¼ to 4/4.You can therefore be sure to find the right guitar for your size depending on your level of practice, your age and of course your height. So, if you are looking for a guitar to give as a gift to your child, it is better to go for the smallest which is ¼ especially if he is between 4 and 6 years old.Up to the age of 8, a ½ guitar seems best suited. For an adult, as you probably already are, you have the choice between a guitar whose size is 3/4, 7/8 and why not a full 4/4.Just remember that comfort comes first. If it is too big or too small for you, you may not find enough motivation to complete your first scratching lessons.

Choose the right handle

Besides the size, the dimensions of the handle are also very important in choosing a classical guitar for beginners. It is thanks to the neck that you can achieve perfect scales, melodious chords and other techniques that you will discover as you learn.Getting back to basics then, the neck size should allow you to play all the notes from the first fret to the last without any difficulty. To check if you have the correct size of the handle, place your thumb halfway up the back of the handle and position your other four fingers on the strings.Try to play the notes of all the strings up to the last fret.If you can play the notes of the last frets of the sixth string very well - your fingers slightly bent - chances are you have the right guitar in your hands.

What about the prices?

Certainly, benchmark brands are much more expensive than low-end classical guitar models. However, be aware that prices are not necessarily a guarantee of quality. In specialty stores, you can find a cheap, good quality guitar as well as a more expensive one of medium quality. A word of advice: if you find a guitar with a rich sound, offering a certain comfort and above all the price of which seems fairly correct, do not hesitate to put your hand in your pocket.
