Red wines: friends or enemies?

Authorized and scientific opinions recognize it: red wine is good for health. Why is this confession so guilty? Because wine is a real paradox, not only in the effects of its consumption, but already when it is made.

As we have seen, among all the beneficial components of red wines there is an intruder: alcohol. But it is precisely because wine is alcoholic that it has all its virtues! During the fermentation then maturation and vinification , sugars mutate into ethanol molecules while the skin and seeds generate polyphenol molecules including the famous resveratrol. Let us recall in passing that red wine is the one with the highest polyphenol content with a bonus for organically grown wines (on average twice as much resveratrol than conventional wines).

For convinced anti-alcoholics, know that polyphenols are found in other foods.
You can, on a daily basis, replace the two glasses of red wine with your choice: 100 g of dark chocolate, 200 g of strawberries, fifteen cups of coffee, a few liters of green tea or ... ten liters of grape juice !

But back to wine. Low in alcohol, it is above all a food and consumed as such, during meals, it releases all its benefits.

This is another paradox of wine. Its consumption is linked to celebration and pleasure, which increases its qualities in a psychosocial dimension: prevention of depression and other disorders linked to anxiety, strengthening of family and collective solidarity.

So, friend or foe?

The scientific community is divided, well aware that succeeding in synthesizing resveratrol in capsules will never make it as powerful a medication or as easy to administer as a glass of red wine with friends.

The debate is currently on the threshold: how many glasses of red wine to recommend / allow? To be continued… Today we are talking (with enormous tongs) of one to three 10 cl glasses per day. Nothing to roll under the table!

Americans now allow wine labels to mention health benefits. China and Japan, however little or not concerned as producers, are following this trend.

In France, for two thousand years, drinking wine has been part of the cultural act and strengthens social ties: we have the land in our genes. Recognizing the benefits of red wine is unlikely to spontaneously generate a population of alcoholics.

So, let us remember that according to Pasteur "wine is the healthiest and most hygienic of drinks" and that in the land of Brillat-Savarin "gluttony is the enemy of excess", to consume for any reason a very French product and full of benefits: red wine. And even better, our good red wine from Provence!
