Waterproof smartphone buying guide
Taking your smartphone everywhere with you is kind of the goal. The best smartphones on the market are real pocket computers with all the hardware that goes with it:a processor, random access memory (RAM) and internal memory (ROM) with an Android or iOS operating system. They keep you informed and in touch. The concern is that if you're in the rain, you might be afraid to take it out, unless it's a high-end smartphone.Sometimes you put your smartphone on the edge of the tub, near the pool or in the toilet. But electronics and water don't mix. This is the reason why it is better to use a waterproof smartphone.
What should you do after your smartphone has come into contact with water?
If you are facing a particularly stressful scenario, such as having your smartphone submerged in water several meters deep, you can try to bring it back to life, but there are very few guarantees because water and electronics are not friends. Whether it's freshwater or seawater, there is no big difference.
The first step is to turn off your phone if it is not already off. If you have a phone with a removable battery, remove it as quickly as possible to be sure.
The second step is to allow sufficient time for the water to escape from the casing of the mobile phone before attempting to use it again. Although some commercially available products attract water around the smartphone, the oldest method is to put it in a small bag of rice and let it sit for at least 48 hours before trying to start it.
In another scenario where your smartphone has received splashes or jets of water, normally your device will not be damaged. The only problem that can occur is that water has entered the SIM card and microSD card slot. The first instinct is to see if your phone still identifies the SIM cards if you are on a dual SIM and micro SD. Otherwise, allow a drying time or blow through the slot.
What to do in the future if your smartphone is wet?
Not dropping your phone in the water is a good start. A few light drops of rain shouldn't be a problem, but full immersion is very problematic.
There have been a few notable series of high-end cell phones that are designed with water resistance in mind. So you have a choice to make.
The latest Apple iPhone models, such as the iPhone XR and iPhone XS, are waterproof, or rather, water-resistant to mean they are water resistant. But, the iPhone XR is rated IP67 and supports submersion up to 1 meter deep. The iPhone XS, on the other hand, is rated IP68 and can therefore go deeper than 1 meter. Both should therefore withstand accidental immersion. For Samsung, the same goes for the Galaxy S8, S9 and S10 as well as the latest Galaxy Note. Among other brands, the LG G8, Sony Xperia XZ Premium and even Alcatel's low-end Go Play smartphone are also waterproof.
What does a protection index mean on a waterproof smartphone?
The IP standard establishes the codes assigned to waterproof smartphones regarding their tolerance to a degree of exposure to water and dust. The IP index is expressed in two digits. The first number indicates protection against solids and the second number indicates protection against water intrusion.
The IP rating is used to determine how well your device is protected against solids and water. The Sony Xperia Z5, for example, is rated IP68. The 6 corresponds to total protection against dust and the 8 indicates that it is completely submersible beyond 1 meter depth.
What about waterproofing treatments for smartphones?
A number of treatments available claim to be able to waterproof a non-waterproof smartphone. But, it is recommended to be careful when choosing this solution.
Sometimes most of these treatments in question simply add a layer of waterproofing to a phone rather than a complete waterproofing. If something goes wrong, you may find yourself in a difficult position, where the manufacturer of the treatment cannot offer you a warranty and neither can the brand of the smartphone due to the treatment affecting the internal components in an unknown way.
This could be the case even if you have a problem that is not related to submersion in water. The waterproofing coating may be the cause.
What about waterproof smartphone cases?
There are a number of cases available for popular models, mainly for iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, which offer both water and drop resistance features. It is a waterproof and impact-proof protective case that makes the smartphone unbreakable and water-resistant. It usually involves sealing your phone inside a hard case that locks around all possible points of water entry.
