What is a circulator?

It is a pump installed in a heating system, the role of which is to drain the heat transfer liquid which warms the apartment. In the vast majority of cases, the liquid in question is water. This water is conveyed at a defined pressure (expressed in bar or in pascal) coupled with a flow rate (which is expressed in cubic meters of water per hour or in liters per second) to the central heating and in the opposite direction. The main characteristic of circulators is that they operate at variable (three levels are often available) or constant speeds. 

The different types of circulators

It is important to know the different types of circulators to be able to make a comparison yourself when you want to buy them. Having this knowledge is also useful when testing multiple models in the purchasing process. Basically, there are two types of circulators that can be installed on heaters.

  • The wet rotor circulator is the most common on installations. It has the particularity of cooling itself down thanks to the water that it drains itself. This is because the rotor running full time overheats. But by the way, the water leaches it so it doesn't exceed a certain temperature. This Circulator is installed directly on the piping and has the advantage of not being expensive in terms of maintenance.
  • Like its counterpart, the in-line pump is also installed directly on the piping. The main difference is in the cooling system. Instead of water, a fan built into the device takes care of it. This is due to the fact that the pump is separated from the machine motor by a seal, unlike the previous configuration.

Why do you need to properly adjust your circulator?

  • It is essential to be able to calculate the flow rate of the circulator. For that, it is necessary to make use of this formula: X = P / Delta x Cm. In this equation, P refers to the power of the generator, it is expressed in kW. As for Delta, it represents the temperature difference that exists between the flow and return of the coolant to the engine of the Circulator. Cm represents what is called specific heat, which is equivalent to 1.163 kWh / t.K.
  • In addition to the flow, the water pressure must be determined. This calculation is equivalent to the total sum of the pressure drops. The operation is done on the longest loop that the circulator will be able to overcome.
  • The last point is all the more important as you need to have a refined knowledge of it to get out of it.
